Paperback Verified Purchase. This book was both more and less than what I expected.
Two-and-a-half stars would be a better rating, but it's unavailable. It was recommended by my instructor of a newbie class for Linux for its shell programming material, but it's a good introduction to UNIX in general, also.
The shell programming coverage is very good and the other material is useful. However, in both cases, shell and UNIX introductory material, many topics are explained well, but there are "holes" and outdated material. The book was first published in , with just a reprint in Some commands are given that are no longer available, such as Banner. It was published in India and thus has many examples of a "thick British accent" that aren't decipherable to an American.
There are just a few outright spelling mistakes, but the type-print is poor lots of artifacts from partial letters and fading ink , paper is too thin and the book was literally falling apart after less than ten days of daily reading. Definitely, only buy a used copy of this book.
By "holes" I mean that the material is lacking some examples, definitions or just missing a topic altogether. Also, the index is far from being complete, which lessens its value as a reference after you've finished reading. The index is inaccurate in several cases as well and he cares not to indicate when more than one page applies to an entry, i.
There are cases when you want to write a double-exclamation point alongside a sentence or paragraph because the explanation is that good. I really liked some of the tables he gives and some of the review questions at the end of each chapter. He writes in an informal style, as if talking to you as a guest in his living room.
He does stress reading the book while sitting at the computer, especially to practice with the commands, shell scripts and exercises at the end of most chapters. Indeed, that is vital to your learning process. There are some cases when he makes a statement that you will later find to need qualifications, such as "No file system can be split over two different disks. My instructor calls RAID an advanced topic and rationalizes this statement as being made because the particular chapter is just an introduction to the Unix File System.
However, I don't like having to unlearn a concept later and do resent such an absolute tone without a footnote. That same chapter, a few pages later, spends about five pages covering indirection, double indirection and triple indirection, which is no longer used in either UNIX or Linux.
Two of its 17 review questions cannot be answered by the material in that chapter-- two more holes. There are no answers at the end of the book and no website for errata, solutions to selected exercises, downloads, etc.
No CD or e-Book to allow searches and other processes. Overall, this book is worth using once, but it's no classic that a newbie should consider vital to his library.
It couldn't be the handy guide that you'd keep on your desk at work to brush up, later. This may be all that you need for shell programming, especially if all you want is more than the basics, but not to reach a solid intermediate level.
It's a good book, but not a great one. You may even choose to scour the Internet, instead, if you're not a book-learning person. It's up to you, according to what you need.
