Never failing? Never being vulnerable? Is that what you want your life to be about? If not, take responsibility even for your mind chattering on about what a failure you are.
Feel the pain. Learn from it. Then move on. When people step into something they want to get out of, be it a briar patch or a mud puddle, This is not so with quicksand.
Meanwhile, living your life is pushed to the side. Vitality and engagement in your life does not require you to eliminate your pain first. It requires quite the opposite: What do you want your life to be about?
Life is also many other things. Ultimately your life is what you choose to make it. When the word machine dominates, life works one way. When the verbal evaluative side of you is but one source of input, life works differently.
The choice here is not about whether or not to have pain. It is whether or not to live a valued, meaningful life. Jan 05, Lindsay rated it really liked it Shelves: ACT is a powerful therapy. I recommend this book to anyone who has experienced episodes of depression or anxiety. The book meanders, is excessively long, and all of what is said could fit into a smaller, better edited work. I kept thinking as I read--what is the point. Didn't finish this one. Oct 05, Aleksandr added it Shelves: I really don't know if I can recommend this book in the end. It could be several times shorter. The book is very repetitive I was planning to try the ACT to improve my focus and get rid of minor bad habits like eating unhealthy food from time to time.
Because of a , I skimmed through the good half of the book just looking for ma I really don't know if I can recommend this book in the end. Because of a , I skimmed through the good half of the book just looking for main points and exercises. Some of the latter seemed really ridiculous to me so I skipped many of them like putting two raisins on the table, looking at them, and thinking how much space do they take in the universe in order to become more mindful.
The few others worked pretty fine. Nevertheless, the things that I managed to crystallize from the text are showing some substantial improvements for me. In effect, the read was basically becoming more aware of myself evaluating thoughts and making decisions and thus controlling them better. I guess the ACT has something to offer and I'll try to read more on it later, but perhaps this book was not my lucky choice for the primer on the topic. Jan 11, Linda Q rated it it was amazing.

I wanted something concrete and this is that. In a scientific but understandable way a path to letting things go is presented. The book is about more than that but that's why I bought it. Find out more about OverDrive accounts. Get ready to take a different perspective on your problems and your life—and the way you live it. Acceptance and commitment therapy ACT is a new, scientifically based psychotherapy that takes a fresh look at why we suffer and even what it means to be mentally healthy.
What if pain were a normal, unavoidable part of the human condition, but avoiding or trying to control painful experience were the cause of suffering and long-term problems that can devastate your quality of life? The ACT process hinges on this distinction between pain and suffering.
As you work through this book, you'll learn to let go of your struggle against pain, assess your values, and then commit to acting in ways that further those values. ACT is not about fighting your pain; it's about developing a willingness to embrace every experience life has to offer. It's not about resisting your emotions; it's about feeling them completely and yet not turning your choices over to them.
ACT offers you a path out of suffering by helping you choose to live your life based on what matters to you most. Even the most successful people have many unhappy experiences, in addition to their positive experiences.
In fact, human emotions shift all the time, minute by minute, hour by hour, and day by day. We all want to look strong and cool on the outside, even if we feel weak and terrible on the inside. Most people look happy on the outside because society teaches us to put on a happy face.
Everybody tends to keep their fears a secret, so we dont get the chance to learn that others are struggling too. This is what we mean by everybody having the same secret. Everybody struggles at some point in life, and everybody seeks to hide this struggle from others.
If theres one key thing we hope youll get from this book, its this: You can develop your knowledge about yourself, about people, and about your possibilities, and this will help you create a life that lets you express your talents and interests. Dont ever let anybody tell you otherwise. When people tell you that you cant live your way, dont believe them. This book is about helping you hear your own voiceand helping you do that now, instead of many years in the future, like we did. So take a little time right now to think about who you are and who you want to become. Then read on. Turn to the next chapter and open the door to a new way of living. If you could only get past feelings of embarrassment, fear, self-criticism, and self-doubt, how would your life be different?
